Together Can Be Streamed, and It Might Make or Break Your Partnership.

We present a dare for partners in committed relationships who enjoy horror films: Settle in with your significant other and watch Together. The 2025 indie hit has now made its online premiere on the Hulu service. At first glance, it might appear like standard biological terror, but inside Together resides a profound examination about how we choose to love one another.

An Introductory Film Delving into The Nuances of Love

Together is the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It showcases Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, partners that have remained a couple for over ten years. Having wed in actuality in 2017, the two stars infuse a unique chemistry to their characters, skillfully embodying both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.

The plot begins when Millie and Tim move from the urban environment to the countryside for her career. A commonly used plot device, of course, but that’s largely where the cliches end. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a body horror flick.

A Paranormal Spark

While trekking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and the protagonists fall into an underground cave. After spending the night there and eventually escaping, a supernatural entity starts to affect the duo. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond typical partnership.

The complete narrative is a methodically building of scares, interspersing bits of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but tastefully done) body horror, and authentically humorous dialogue (sometimes during something disturbing). Shanks skillfully blends these components seamlessly and wraps them up in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.

Layered Performances

A great deal of Together is solely the two lead actors, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his reluctance to focus on anything other than his floundering music career inexorably rises.

Conversely, Tim senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and far away from his network of friends. He fears the notion of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he can’t drive and relies on Millie for mobility.

The director's cleverest decision is that he never makes Tim or Millie the obvious villain.

The couple confront the type of challenges that come with most partnerships a decade in. At their core, they have affection for one another. They find humor with each other, comfort one another, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their future together.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these concerns of excessive reliance and fully committing to a partner, the allegory does not come across as overly obvious or pretentious. Instead, these visceral horror elements provide a perfect parallel to the relationship narrative. Both the frights and the fights serve the other symbiotically.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has sparked debate on the movie's final takeaway about unhealthy partnerships. Accounts suggest that unattached audience members have interpreted the film as a strong argument for avoiding commitment. Meanwhile, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them reconcile.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own response could function as a telling indicator of how you view relationships. Will the ending plant a sense of discomfort and fear, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in one of the characters and yell at the screen, or simply glance toward your significant other and state, “I’d do that for you”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an exploration you can undertake at this very moment.

Together is available to watch on the streaming service Hulu as of this moment.
