The national team terminated world champions the Proteas' winning streak by achieving a 93-run victory in an thrilling and competitive opening Test in Lahore.

The Proteas, who had a 10-Test unbeaten run in Test cricket ended with a win against Australia in the World Test Championship final in June, were bowled out for 183 in pursuit of 277.

Starting the day on 51-2, they lost first-innings centurion Tony de Zorzi leg before wicket to pace bowler Shaheen Afridi to the third ball of the day to push the tightly balanced chase in Pakistan's favour.

Slow left-armer Noman Ali, who took 10 wickets for 191 runs in the match, removed Stubbs for two and clean bowled Dewald Brevis, who put up a fight with a run-a-ball 54.

Right-arm spinner Sajid Khan also capitalized on sharp turn to end opener Ryan Rickelton's stay - he lasted 145 deliveries for 45 - and Afridi came back in the post-lunch session to dismiss the tail with a impressive exhibition of reverse-swing bowling.

He had Verreynne lbw for nineteen and bowled Prenelan Subrayen and Rabada to seal the win.

It was each team's first match of the 2025-27 World Test Championship cycle and propels Pakistan straight into the number two spot after leaders Australia.

The win was founded on contributions of 93 by opening batsman Imam-ul-Haq and, importantly, number seven Salman Agha which lifted them to three hundred and seventy-eight.

From there spinners Noman Ali and Sajid Khan took advantage of helpful home pitches, as they had in their series victory over the English team last year, to maintain their advantage.

The second and last match starts on 20 October.
