The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Might Solve This

Whenever a significant honors show draws close, one notices a demand to include additional classifications to honor unsung work and fill the passions of fans dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague made the case supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. Equally deserving are board games, this being a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize just as with other single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification backing this proposal stands as crucial and significant. Here's the proposal: There should be an award type for logic-based games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Classifying creative works isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and typically generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why cinema institutions avoid this approach. But it is an essential concession for the industry of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these classifications actually cover a lot of ground, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Consider three of this year’s best games, all very different: the architectural riddles in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

Acknowledgment Issues

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games released every year that have no home at major award shows, if they accidentally match classification types such as Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated for anything that year
  • A different innovative game was excluded in 2019
  • A beloved organization game got ignored in 2021
  • Just some logic titles scraped into small studio or handheld classifications

Importance of Logic Titles

Frequently they represent small games, yet the craft behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most engaged experiences in the world maintaining this status for many years.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges popular creative games claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.

The Solution and Justification

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. One could readily select five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these are games that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators function at the demanding boundary interactive creation, creating some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
