Former President Donald Trump received a royal reception on the start of the week in Japan, the latest leg of a week-long Asian journey which he hopes to finish with an arrangement on a trade conflict ceasefire with Chinese president Xi Jinping.

Donald Trump, making his longest journey abroad since assuming the presidency in January, announced deals with four Southeast Asian countries during the opening phase in Malaysia and is expected to encounter Xi in Seoul on later this week.
President Trump shook hands with dignitaries on the airport runway and displayed a multiple enthusiastic motions, before his aircraft carried him away for a picturesque evening excursion of Tokyo. The prime minister, who became Japan's first female premier in the past seven days, told Trump that reinforcing their bilateral relationship was her "primary focus" in a telephonic discussion on Saturday.

However, he continued: "I wouldn't do that. I believe it's excessively tricky. Yeah, I would eliminate that option because it's overly clever. I think the public would object to that. It's overly clever. It isn't - it would not constitute proper."
