Patients Coming Off Slimming Injections Regain Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study indicates that patients who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who stop conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Findings released in a leading medical journal shows that while obese individuals often shed about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Individuals buying these treatments must be cognizant of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery implies a return to original mass in about 18 months.

Analyzing Treatments

The study, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of these new drugs with other pills.

Scientists note that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically have a less rapid creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Explaining the Fast Rebound

Doctors suggest the way of the drugs explains the amplified rebound.

GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could diminish responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Stopping of this medication leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating far more likely."

A Lifelong Condition?

Health authorities advise the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians argue that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy should be considered life-long.

This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "underscore the persistent character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Accounts

People who have discontinued the jabs report a sudden return of cravings.

"It felt as if a switch activating and you're instantly ravenous," said an individual.

The struggle is compounded if patients have not established permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Growing Interest

Figures show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Use is greater among women than men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, experts caution that while these medications are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss likely depends on integrated behavioural management.
