Federal Reserve Reduces Interest Rates for Second Instance This Year During Economic Uncertainty
The United States monetary authority reduced interest rates on Wednesday, marking the second reduction this year amid financial volatility stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.
Move Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve
The move to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs even with persistent inflation.
Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Shifts
In a announcement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the release notes. “Price increases has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”
Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task
The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the closure.
Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves
The Federal Reserve typically analyzes BLS data to determine employment trends, including the number of new jobs added to the economy and the present unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was released in early September, before the shutdown, and provided a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in August.
The number of jobs added to the economy in August was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.
Private Data Show Continued Decline
Though the bureau was scheduled to release last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it halted its release when the shutdown started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the business segment eliminated 32,000 jobs in last month, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.
“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said recently, which he had previously said comes from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Shows Moderate Rise
Though the bureau’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still released its price statistics for last month that indicated that costs are rising, albeit slowly. Costs rose three percent over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
